i want to own a coffee shop.
a cute little city corner coffee shop with long windows, eclectic tables and chairs, homemade muffins, and friendly faces. i think it would be absolutely delightful to bake muffins and create espresso drinks for a living.
dale and i have tossed around some ideas...he wants to put a big map on the wall and each customer could put a pin on where they are from (making customers feel as though they have value and worthy contribution). he also wants to have a shelf where people can pick out their own mugs out of which to drink, and if people bring in a mug donation, they will get a free cup of coffee. i like it. so in addition to eclectic tables and chairs, our mugs would be very eclectic as well...with stories behind them and from all different places, brought together for none other than the sake of coffee deliciousness.
and let's not forget about being ethically conscious individuals. we would serve fair trade organic coffee only. my goal would be to not buy new tables, chairs, mugs, or any other decorative item, but to search for them around the city. this would help reduce unnecessary production of items. conservation is good.
did you know that coffee grounds can be composted? yeah, we'd do that too. and recycle!
and just to throw it out there- i want to grow my own tea leaves too. i'd looooove that.
and to think how many people i'd meet! to have regulars come in who love the coffee and support the business.
a prime example of this is jj's, where i work. matt comes in for a double shot of espresso, teddy loves iced coffee, and the guy who works down the street who loves his a, fat-free sugar-free vanilla iced double latte. of course i didn't know that when i started there... the first few months i worked there, sam introduced me to what it seemed like every single person who walked through the door. he knows them by name and knows their story. that's why everyone who comes there loves to come back. they love sam and know he'll ask for an update on their life. sam told me when i started there that we don't just serve coffee; we serve hope. i may or may not have thought that was weird back then (definitely did)... now i like it. i know what he means. people leave the shop at the sound of a jingle on the door, ready to conquer what is on the other side.
maybe the dream will come true one day.

i would clean toilets in your coffee shop if that meant i could have in my life forever!
i am not allowing such a comment on my blog. i just needed to know I was in fact not an idiot :)
Just now catching up on blogs...at work but not awake enough yet to actually work, so I'm sipping my coffee and reading blogs. Anyways, I just wanted to say that this post made me a little teary. I think it's a beautiful idea and you should really do it. Have you been to Ugly Mugs before? They have their coffee cups donated by people, hence the ugly mugs name. I don't think they do the free cup of coffee thing for donating a mug, which is a great idea! I would definitely be a regular at your coffee shop of hope :)
